I worked with the City of Medford to design and construct a meditation labyrinth on a site in Medford that showed exceptionally high levels of soil contamination and needed to be covered with a concrete cap (a type of engineered barrier) so that it would not will not pose a risk to park users or to the general public. This journey of transforming a contaminated site to a space of healing involved abutting neighbors, city staff, T.Ford Construction company, and the collaboration of Terry Carter, who penned 3 verses in the middle of each labyrinth swirl, and was a wonderful thought partner in deciding the words on the welcome/exit arch. This project was funded by the City’s Community Preservation Act Fund.

Poetry verses for the three labyrinth placements at the center of each swirl, by Medford Poet Laureate Terry Carter
1.
Soul and spirit, mind and heart…
within this space, may journeys start
to unwrap coils of stress and rage,
and manifest a brighter page,
to turn fear into fragrant hope,
and give each human strength to cope.
2.
Among the green and gray and brown,
there hides a smile for every frown.
For every hurt, there is an oil,
a balm derived from simple soil.
Within the maze of human pain,
a new perspective we may gain.
3.
The ripple of the Mystic’s stream
at river’s edge evokes a dream.
And yet the flow is with us still.
It leads the poet to ink and quill.
These paths may twist with every stone.
Find a road to make your own.
