Diamonds of Egleston

In collaboration with Greater Egleston High School (GEHS) and Erika Lawson from Lawson’s Barber Shop, a legacy business in Egleston Square, I designed and installed sculptural seating using construction debris from a house being built down School street. Lawson Park is named in honor of Erika’s father Robert, who started the Barber Shop in the early 70’s. Each seat has a different quote from Mr. Lawson, whose presence has and continues to uplift our most vulnerable in our community. This project was funded by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, through it’s STARS Residency program.

Students from Greater Egleston created their own unique fonts to write the quotes, scanned them into a special program, and laser engraved the words onto the wood that was used in the top of the diamonds. We cut and assembled the wood at the school and installed them just in time for our community’s Juneteenth celebration!
