Hernandez Rain Garden Restoration and Signage

Green Infrastructure projects at Boston Public Schools was the topic that was highlighted for the 2023 Public Space Invitational Grants from the Mayors Office of New Urban Mechanics. I was awarded a grant to create interactive signage and stewardship opportunities at the Hernandez School rain garden, and help our community understand how stormwater moves through and under our school landscape and how to care for it. The work with the school community and resulting signage serves to inspire curiosity and appreciation, and creatively reflect the interconnectedness of our experience with the cycles of nature. I worked with the school community to remove the crabgrass which had filled the whole space, and planted 22 species of native shrubs and perennials and created numbers which I placed near them which are described in a plant guide sign so folx can get to know their names too!

Each plant corresponds with a number painted on a cube in the garden
