BUMPKIN WHEELCHAIRS

BUMPKIN WHEELCHAIRS
Summer 2009
Bumpkin Island, MA
Materials:  Oriental bittersweet vines, fallen Sumac trees.
Dimensions: 3′ x 7′ x 3′

Created during my time as a Ranger / Artist in Residence on Bumpkin Island, where I began experimenting with Oriental Bittersweet vines, which are abundant on Bumpkin Island.

The wheelchairs are a point of departure for telling the story of Bumpkin Island’s Burrage Hospital for Crippled Children, which was destroyed by fire in 1945. I created 3 of them: one on the site of the Burrage Hospital ruins, one looking towards Hull, and one looking towards the dock.
